Since its inception three decades ago, the 30 Ceramic Sculptors Annual Exhibition has grown congruently with the ceramic art world in Northern California. Three decades ago there were few major ceramic programs at the Junior, City and State College levels; The dominant instructors and schools were Peter Voulkos at UC Berkeley, Viola Frey at the California College of Arts and Crafts, Robert Arneson at UC Davis, Ruth Rippon at Sacramento State University, Ron Nagle at Mills College, and Richard Shaw at San Francisco Art Institute.
Although Arneson, Frey, and Voulkos may have been pioneers in the ceramic world in the 1960’s, an incredible time for artists and teachers, this exhibition seems to demonstrate that this is the time for a rebirth of figurative ceramics in the region. This exhibition is dedicated to Tom Rippon, who lived a short but influential life. Truly one of the pioneers of porcelain sculpture. Rippon’s imagery remains constant and vital to an understanding of the field of ceramics.
